Music Video Rationale

Rationale - Why I chose the song? The Calling - Wherever you will go

I decided to use this song for my music video because of the resources I am currently able to use. The rock genre is also the best genre to base my video on because of the resources I have access to. The main resource is the band that I want to use in the video. There are many musicians that could possibly make up a band for my video as the musicians play guitars, drums or sing. This is useful because I can easily access them and I want to include guitarists, drummers and a singer in my video.

I also chose this song because I can incorporate a story into my video. This is because of the pace of the song. The song's pace is quite slow at the beginning of the song but quickens up as the song gets going. I think I could incorporate a story into the video by the story getting going more as the song quickens up.

Inspirations for music video

These examples and screenshots of other music videos are what will inspire me to create my music video. I will include examples of characters, mise en scene and camerawork.

I want to include a band in my music video similar to the example screenshot above. I have used this as an example because I want the amount of members in the band similar to this with a main singer, two guitarists and a drummer.

This screenshot above shows where the band is located in a Coldplay music video. I have chosen this screenshot as an example because I want to use my band in a similar location to this. I want to use the band in an outside location which could make it look like they are performing on a stage. I will either use the band outside in front of a building or without a building and just in open space.

I also want the clothing to be similar to the clothing that the band are wearing above. This is because rock bands usually wear darker clothing.

The props used will also be similar to the screenshot above as I will use drums, guitars and a microphone for the main singer.

This screenshot above shows a tracking shot. I have decided to use this as a screenshot because I want to include some tracking shots in my video.

This screenshot above shows a wide shot in a Sleeping With Sirens music video. I have decided to include this screenshot because I want to include some wide shots in my video. The wide shots will allow the user to see the whole band clearly.

Music Video Soundtrack

This song by The Calling will be the soundtrack for my music video. It is called Wherever you will go.

Annotated song lyrics - The Calling, Wherever you will go

These are the song lyrics for the song that I am creating my video for. Wherever you will go by The Calling.

Music Video Treatment

Mise en scene
Locations - I want to use a music band in my video and I want the location of the band to be outside. With the band being outside, I could make it so it looks like the band are playing on a stage. This would make it feel and look like they are actually playing and performing the song. I also want to include characters and a story in my video. I want the location of the story to be a mixture of outside and inside locations.
Costume and Make-up -
Props - I have decided that I want to include props in my music video. The props I will include will be microphones and instruments. The microphone will be for the band's lead singer and the instruments will be used by the other members of the band. The instruments that the other band members will use will be guitars and drums.
Performance - In my video, the artists will be represented as a band playing and performing their music. I know that they will be represented as this because of the props that they will use. The props will be the instruments that they use such as guitars and drums. I also want to include a story in my video so the characters will be represented as people in a story.
Lighting - The lighting used in my video will mainly be natural lighting. This is because the locations used will be outside and inside where the light will come from the location, either sunlight or other ambient lighting that's around.
Colour Palette - The colour palette of my video will mainly be greys and creams. This is because these are the main natural colours of outside and inside. The colour palette will also get a bit darker because of the clothing that the band will wear. The band will wear darker clothing which will suit the rock genre more.

Camera Techniques

In my video, I will frame most of the characters and performers in the centre of the frame. The lead singer in the band will be framed in the centre, with the other musicians in the band framed behind or to the side of the lead singer. Being framed in the centre allows the audience to see them clearly, and it shows that they are the main importance in the shot. These shots will be well in focus so they can be seen clearly. I will use a range of shots in my video. These are some of the shots and movements that I intend to use; Close-up, medium shot, long shot, wide shot, establishing shot, point of view shot, tracking shot over the shoulder shot, pans, tilts, zooms and low angle shots.

Edit Techniques

The main edit techniques that I will use will be fades and cuts. I will use a fade in at the start of the video and I will also use a fade out at the end of the video. I will use cuts in between each shot to make the transitions smoother and to show passages of time. I will also use an eye line match to show characters' point of view. The edit rate of my video will be quite quick. It won't be as quick as some music videos but it will still have quite a lot of cuts.

Animation - I won't use any animation in my music video.

Performance - I will use quite a lot of performance in the video. The performance that I will use will be lip syncing, singing to camera, acting as a character and demonstrating musicianship. The music band will use singing to camera, and this will be shown by lip syncing. Acting as a character will be used by the characters acting in the video, and demonstrating musicianship will be used by the band as they will be playing drums and guitars.

Intertextuality - I won't use any intertextuality in my music video.

Where the video might be shown  - When it's completed, my video will be shown on youtube for people to view.

Target Audience - The Target Audience will mainly be males aged between 16-35. This is because that age group are usually the ones who enjoy the rock genre more.

Paramore music video analysis

  • There are approximately 200 cuts. This gives the video a high pace, matching the music track.
  • The lighting is constructed to create a match with the clips from the film Twilight that are intercut into the video due to a record deal between Paramore and the film producers. This adds a slightly dreary look to the footage - as if filmed on a grey-sky day.
  • The video is predominantly filmed in a wooded area with tall trees, matching those within the Twilight clips. These allow the artists to clamber around and hide themselves during the video, giving a sense of mystery and suspicion.
  • The artists (when not shown performing) look around, hide, and back away from seemingly invisible threats, emulating the defensive nature of the Twilight characters.
  • All the musicians clothes match the mood and are similar to the clothes in the Twilight clips. They also match slightly gothic themes to the music.
  • Grey colour palette, creates a dull mood. Except for the lead singers hair that is a striking red.
  • The singer's always in the centre of the frame, while the others musicians are off centre showing the singer's importance over the others.
  • The camera moves around a lot in the video which keeps the audience disorientated.
  • Towards the start of the video, a lot of fades are used.
  • The editing pace is very quick throughout the video which also puts the audience on edge and again makes it mysterious.
  •  A range of camera shots, angles and movements are used in the video including:
  • Zooms - These can focus in on a character or object and they also focus out of a character or object.
  • Trombone shots
  • A lot of dollies to move around the musicians
  • High and low angle shots
  • Aerial shots from above which look down on the musicians. This again makes them the main focus and they're usually framed in the centre.
  • Close-ups, medium shots and long shots
  • Canted Framing to make the audience disorientated, putting them on edge and giving them a sense of mysteriousness, similar in the Twilight film.
  • They use lip syncing very well and they put the main singer in the centre of the frame to make her the main focus to show her lip syncing.
  • Characters are used in the video as many clips are shown from the Twilight movie.
  • Intertextuality - The video makes many references to the Twilight movie by adding clips from the movie into the video. This gives the audience a sense of what the video is about and gives it a meaning.
  • The video could be shown on many music channels on TV, mainly the rock music channels. This is to advertise Paramore and their music to a wider audience.
  • I think the target audience of this video is all ages and both genders but I think the main age range is 15 - 23.
